Witness to (Tennis) History: Indian Wells Edition (Witness to History Book 1)

This book is the first in what will be a series of books exploring the idea of witnessing things in person, and of the value that holds. What is that impulse about, that drives us to seek such experiences as humans? Why is it important to us, and so much more to some than others? Is it important to record our experiences; to bear witness to what we are living through, to fully understand and experience our lives? What will be left of us, of what we have all witnessed, when future historians and archaeologists try and piece together what we’ve left behind?

I love history, and I love the idea of knowing I am there to witness it as it is happening, in whatever category it happens to be. When it comes to sports, I’m drawn to the idea of witnessing greatness up close; of being there to see and experience for myself a great player practicing his or her craft. When it comes to politics and world history, I feel a similar urge. Right now, we are witnessing what could be a seismic shift and realignment of the global world order. We can’t choose what events we are witness to when it comes to war and peace, or presidents and kings and prime ministers. We can, however, choose what sporting events we want to witness; what great players we want to see doing what they were born to do, while they are in the prime of their lives.

I hope you’ll enjoy this collection of some of the stories I’ve heard, told, and witnessed during my (first) six trips to the BNP Paribas Open, a tennis tournament held every March at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, about twenty minutes outside Palm Springs. During those years I was lucky enough to witness great players in action many times, among them Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. Tennis history, up close and personal, even if sometimes it was from the top of the stadium.

It’s a combination of travel stories, unabashedly biased and decidedly non-expert observations of tennis matches and practices, and a snapshot of a tournament and its players captured at a particular moment in time. It’s about how we all see the world through our own particular set of lenses, and how that’s true no matter whether the issue is big or small. It’s about how we can all benefit from seeing the world from a different perspective, even if it’s just while watching a tennis match.
