Glimpses of Gauguin (Art Fiction Series: Book 3)

GLIMPSES OF GAUGUIN, a novel in sketches, is the third work of fiction in Maryann D’Agincourt’s Art Fiction series. What is Art Fiction? Maryann D’Agincourt has merged her passions for art and literature into a unique and powerful form of storytelling. Art Fiction is a literary genre in which art is not solely an object, but is a reflection of what is human in all of us. Ms. D’Agincourt has been viewing Paul Gauguin’s masterpiece “Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?” from her early childhood visits to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to the present, providing inspiration for her stunning novel in sketches. GLIMPSES OF GAUGUIN is a coming of age story which follows Jocelyn from childhood to middle age, starting at the moment in her youth when she first hears the name of the mysterious painter, Alex Martaine, whispered by her parents. Jocelyn, her art-loving mother, and her literary father, each has a unique relationship with the artist, and he does, in ways Jocelyn could never imagine, turn each of their lives around. Reflecting the themes evident in Paul Gauguin’s painting, Ms D’Agincourt explores Jocelyn’s growth as a young woman facing the challenges of family life, school, relationships, love and marriage. Jocelyn’s feelings of loss mirror the angst expressed by Gauguin in his masterpiece, and are the catalyst for her life path. As one literary reviewer observes:

"…these moments mirror the feel of childhood and the gradual process of self-realization very well…

A precisely rendered image of a quest to tease out life’s larger meaning."

Other works in Maryann D”Agincourt’s Art FIction series:

JOURNAL OF EVA MORELLI, a National Book Award nominated novel inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s “Undergrowth with Two Figures,1890” is psychologically astute and compelling as life and art merge in the minds of the characters. Psychiatrist Stephen Forester and his wife Brea left the frenzy of New York City ten years before in search of a quiet life in a tranquil seaside community in New Hampshire. But when the elusive Eva Hathaway steps into Stephen’s office and begins to reveal the story of her own tragic past, his convictions start to crumble. Over the sweltering summer that follows, Stephen becomes more and more haunted by obscure memories of his childhood as he wonders what secret could be so terrible that Eva can only reveal in her journal.

ALL MOST is an insightful collection of short stories inspired by Oskar Kokoschka’s “Two Nudes (Lovers),1913” which takes the reader through a diverse array of lives and relationships, from a journalist finding new love after the death of her husband to a schoolgirl shocked to discover her mother’s secrets. Ms. D’Agincourt delves deep into the emotional lives of her characters and sheds light on the mysteries of human decisions and the significance of art and music in our lives.

PRINTZ , soon to be published fourth novel in Maryann D’Agincourt’s Art Fiction series is inspired by two works of art, Amedeo Modigliani’s “Portrait of Henri Laurens, sitting, 1915” and Willem de Kooning, “Seated Woman,1940”. In the words of Antanas Sileika, author of UNDERGROUND, and director of Humber School of Writers, “PRINTZ is a moving lyrical novel that tells the story of two emotionally wounded people who find one another unexpectedly in Paris. Haunting and occasionally melancholy, this beautiful novel attempts to find redemption from grief.”

Read and enjoy Maryann D’Agincourt’s literary vision, and learn to look at art in a new way.
